Essay Poe

The Fall of the House of Usher and A Rose for Emily contain many similarities and differences among each. We can say that, coming from different authors their writing technique is different, but despite that, both stories keep many secrets and have a dark side that nobody expects. In this essay, I will be presenting a comparison of both stories from many points of view.

The Fall of the House of Usher describes everything in detail so the reader can visualize all the gothic atmosphere which arises in the history. On the other hand, in A Rose for Emily they used imagery so the reader will use his senses. This, we see when it is described the unpleasant smell coming from the house of Emily. However, I consider the technique of writing, in the history of Edgar Allan Poe, to be rather complex since it uses educated words making it a little difficult for us to comprehend the analysis at work. While the other story uses a technique more popular and easy-to-understand that allows us a better interpretation.

When we speak of the characters, there are many similarities but also differences. For example, Emily and Usher are two individuals who have mental problems and we found out at the end of both stories that they are killers of people who are supposed to have caught them affection. Now, with respect to the narrators in The Fall of the House of Usher we noticed that the narrator is the friend of Usher. While we do not know his name, he is someone who has a certain connection with one of the characters. In another hand, the narrator in A Rose for Emily is completely unknown; it can be deduced that it is someone from the village and related to the story, but is never specifically set. Also in both stories, a victim exists. On the one hand, we have Lady Madeline who was buried alive by his brother Usher and his friend (who did not know the she was alive) and on the other we have Homer Barron who was killed by Emily that is believed that he was killed with arsenic.

Finally, as we can see in both stories we can present the differences and similarities of each one. Both stories have themes of death, darkness, intrigue, secrets, among others, although having the same topics, they are not the same. In the personal point of view, the story I liked most was A Rose for Emily, because since it was easier to understand due to the wording allows us to understand better the message and give the work a better analysis. Also, the end was something that really, I was not expecting to happen and left me shocked that she slept with the corpse of Homer. It was more creepy and intriguing than The Fall of the House of Usher.
